A word cloud, or tag cloud, is a visual representation of keywords within a text. The world of unstructured data is having explosive growth now with text content. you see text everywhere in the social media be in product reviews, comments, messages, announcements or even simply with status updates.

While Traditional charts and visualization techniques are great at making sense of structured data, they generally fall short when it comes to textual data. We often have to look for creative new ways for presenting text data. Word Cloud makes this experience exciting and fun in Power BI.

Word Cloud is a visual representation of word frequency and value. Use it to get instant insight into the most important terms in your data.

With the interactive experience of Word Cloud in Power BI, you no longer have to tediously dig through large volumes of text to find out which terms are prominent or prevalent. You can simply visualize them as Word Cloud and get the big picture instantly and user Power BI’s interactivity to slice and dice further to uncover the themes behind the text content.

This visual also puts you in control on the appearance of the work cloud, be it the size or usage of space and how to treat the data. You can choose to break the words in the text to look for the frequency word or keep word break off to project a measure as a value of the text. You can also enable stop words to remove the common terms from the word cloud to avoid the clutter. By enabling rotation and playing with the angles allowed, you can become very creative with this visual.

Word Cloud is slick and adds a new dimension to the Power BI custom visuals experience. Check out this video to see this in action.

To use, simply import the Word Cloud from the Visuals gallery to your Power BI report and use it with a text column. Optionally you can also use a measure to provide weightage to the text. If none provided, it will simply use the frequency. Check out the formatting pane for more options.

Instructions explain how to make a word cloud. This is a fun activity for kids. There are many free online sites that allow students to create their own word cloud. One of my favorites is WordClouds. What is a Word Cloud?

A word cloud is a picture made from words about a topic. The more important a word, the larger it appears. Typically, the words are arranged randomly. Most word clouds can be formatted to set the font, color, and shape. This transforms the word cloud into art.

Tips for Generating a Word List

Help your students generate a list of words associated with the topic of their word cloud. The words can be:

  • topic name
  • descriptive terms
  • people connected to topic
  • objects or parts related to the topic
  • slang associated with the topic
  • popular sayings about the topic

Follow these tips when writing the word list:

  • Make it BIG: To have the word appear larger in the word cloud, repeat it many times in the word list.
  • Avoid using Spaces Between Words: If the item is a phrase or person’s name, you must write it as ONE WORD with NO SPACES. You can use capital letters or underscores to make the information clear. For example TonyHawk or Tony_Hawk.
  • Separate Each Word with a Comma: In the word list put a comma after each word. Do not press the ENTER key after each word. Instead the list should look something like this: word1, word2, word3

How to Make a Word Cloud

Generate a list of words using a word processing program:

    1. Open Microsoft Word, Notepad, or a similar word processing program.
    2. Type words related to your topic.

    1. Save the file as word cloud.
    2. If using Microsoft Word, change the file type to Plain Text or .txt.

  1. When a File Conversion message is displayed, click OK.

Create a word cloud using wordclouds.com:

    1. Visit WordClouds.com.
    2. Click File. Select Open text file.
    3. Locate file and click Open.
    1. Explore the formatting options:
      • widen or tighten gaps
      • direction of words
      • invert
      • shape
      • mask
      • theme
      • colors
      • font

  1. When finished, click File. Select Save as PNG.
  2. Close all open programs.
